RICO2e℠ is a ‘regionally-based’ marketing option in the LICO2e™ programmatic menu.
Like LICO2e™, the power of RICO2e℠ is maximized through Public/Private/NGO partnerships, that allow local, regional, state, and/or national stakeholders the opportunity to leverage their decarbonization objectives to the benefit of their own ‘regionally invested carbon offsets’ and economy.
Unlike other voluntary offset opportunities in the marketplace, where dollars commonly leave the regional economy, RICO2e℠ is targeted at keeping those dollars ‘closer to home’, while providing broader regional partnerships to leverage their geographic identity and brand value.
For example, the St. Croix River represents the ~125 mile boundary of Minnesota and Wisconsin. It is one of the original Wild and Scenic Rivers designated by Congress in three separate segments between 1968 and 1976. The St Croix watershed spreads across 18 counties (9 on each side of the boundary), and is roughly 7,700 square miles in size. The history of the St Croix River is culturally rich, and identity with such runs broad and deep across its communities, and the Twin Cities metropolitan area.
The St. Croix River watershed, like so many others across the country, has been the focus of premier public-private partnerships to raise awareness, understanding, appreciation, protection, and brand value of this irreplaceable, regionally-based natural resource asset, not to mention the ‘sense of place’ and identity for sustainability-based economic development, especially ecosystem services, conservation development, outdoor recreation, and ecotourism, to name a few.
Watersheds, like the St. Croix, collectively represent a perfect opportunity for stakeholder partnerships to recognize and rally around the ‘best available science’ of climate change impacts that are already beginning to dramatically alter the unique environmental, social and economic values that each watershed represents. These also represent the opportunity to mitigate the loss of inter-generational identity, ‘sense of place’, and pride that is embodied in the integrity of the St. Croix for the long haul.
As such, it represents a perfect opportunity for utilization of RICO2e℠ as a fund-raising mechanism for achieving conservation and decarbonization objectives and initiatives that address all these challenges, directly and indirectly.
